Flutter

Flutter is an animation I co-created with Jackson Roberts. It commemorates the memory of my grandmother and the feelings of confusion when a child first encounters death. I drew from my memories of her knitting and used the symbol of a butterfly as a throughline and a representation of the child's uncertainty throughout her grandma's illness.
To achieve its unique aesthetic, we developed a hybrid workflow: mapping 2D look development, lighting, and materials onto 3D animation. This allowed us to utilize dynamic camera movements to build a surreal, dreamlike atmosphere while preserving the endearing, hand-drawn style of the original character designs.
Flutter is still in its festival run and has been selected for Glendale International Film Festival, Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival and ARFF Amsterdam International Awards so far.
